Is the yellow fever vaccine mandatory or not?

This vaccine is the one that creates the most confusion among our clients, so we decided to dedicate a blog post to it in order to clarify this point concerning the entry to Tanzania.

The vaccine is not mandatory if you come directly from Europe or the United States.

The yellow fever vaccine is only mandatory if you come from a country considered at risk or if you stop over for more than 12 hours in a country at risk. To see the list of countries at risk, click here.

For example, if you travel with KLM with a direct flight from Amsterdam to Kilimanjaro, then this vaccine is not mandatory. However, if you have a stopover of more than 12 hours in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, then you will need to be vaccinated.

We strongly recommend that you consult your doctor in any case. Indeed, he/she may advise you against getting vaccinated, this may be due to your age (over 60 years) or your medical situation.

If your doctor advises you not to be vaccinated against yellow fever for one of these reasons, you can still come to Tanzania. Simply ask your doctor for an official letter to show upon arrival in Tanzania and your trip will proceed as planned.

According to the official list of the World Health Organization, Tanzania does not present a risk of yellow fever transmission.
