Is a visa mandatory for Tanzania?
Yes, if you book a safari in Tanzania or a trip to Zanzibar, a visa is required when you enter the country. But how to get it? Read the rest of this article to get all the required information.
How to get a visa and how much does it cost?
When preparing your trip, you should know that there are two different methods to obtain a visa for Tanzania or for Zanzibar. You will find all the details below. The cost of the tourist visa is $50 per person for EU, CH and UK citizens. For US citizens, the cost of the visa is $100 per person.
Method number 1: Online application
As of January 2020, visas for Tanzania can no longer be applied for at embassies. You have to apply online on the official website of the Tanzanian government: https://eservices.immigration.go.tz/visa. Once you have completed the application on this site, it takes about 10 days to receive your visa by email.
Method number 2: Application upon arrival at the airport
If you did not have time to apply online, or if you forgot, you can get your visa upon arrival at the airport in Tanzania or Zanzibar. You will need to fill out a form (which you may already get on the plane depending on the airline you are traveling with) and then you will go through different counters until you get your visa. The waiting time depends on whether you are among the first to get off the plane or among the last. Indeed, if you are among the first passengers to exit the plane, then the queue to get the visa on the spot is not too long, let’s say 2o minutes. On the other hand, if you are among the last passengers to leave the plane, then there will be more waiting, let’s say that it can go up to 1 hour or even a little more.
What do I have to pay attention to in order to get my visa?
An important point to pay attention to in order to obtain a visa is the expiry date of your passport. Indeed, in order to obtain your visa, your passport must still be valid at least 6 months after your return date from Tanzania. So make sure to check the expiry date of your passport.
Also note that if only one parent is traveling with a minor child, the other parent must provide a document, in English, in which he or she gives permission for the child to travel.
